These are some the words I hear when I ask my unusual questions,
discovering what will guide us as we decorate, remodel or arrange a living space.
I say “unusual questions” because it I’m not asking, “what’s
your style?” or “what’s your favorite color?” or other
common questions. I’m not interested in conforming to the limited
expectations that those questions set.
Instead, I focus on exploring what you truly love, your essence, your soul,
and exploring how to express those aspects in your surroundings. I’m
looking for the vibrations, the expressions that feel most true to you. (I’ll
talk more about the vibrations and how you can discover what resonates for you
in future issues of The Art of WellBeing.)
When you consider your environment – the place where you live – as
an extension of your inner-self, or as a place to express and ground you in your
Vital, Authentic, or Passionate self, you can free yourself from the bounds of
expectation, style and rules. One tangible result is: It makes decorating,
remodeling and arranging your home so much easier!
I invite you begin asking yourself more intriguing, curious questions.
What’s the experience you want to create when you’re
in your home?
How you want to feel in your home?
What experience do you want to create for yourself, your family?
Allow yourself to explore, courageously “push the envelope.” There
are no wrong or ridiculous answers.
You might think that some of your answers don’t really have anything to
do with the decorating or furniture issue you’re addressing. They
do.
Several years ago a woman invited me into her home. She wanted her bedroom
to be a healing sanctuary. She liked the room. It was spacious, had
good light and air flow. She slept well in the room, but it didn’t
feel like her sanctuary.
To begin, I asked her questions just like the ones I’m asking you. Then
I asked her to close her eyes and let herself imagine what healing means to her,
what sanctuary means. I invited her to be curious with her senses. What
sounds, textures, tastes, colors did she notice?
